What begins as a pursuit of fine art often detours into design illustration. Art can be provocative and subjective. Design is focused on message and metaphor. Artistic talent can be distracting and challenging. The artwork is more about the process of the artist sometimes. Design is deceptively simple. Effective illustration does not wow the viewer with technique and skill. Effective design is catchy and memorable and digestible to anyone with a grade 6 education.
I begin my designs on paper, but I quickly move to Adobe Illustrator for the majority of my illustrations. I prefer a flat papercut style with solid colour fields. This helps emphasize form and colour harmony and helps further drives the message. Sometimes my designs are more photography based, at which point I build my multi-layer designs in Photoshop.
T-Shirt design for Camp summer 2022. I was asked to represent the dinner bell at Camp which takes the form of a circle of iron hanging from a tree struck by a sledgehammer. I chose to represent it using the popular ‘striped sunset with silhouette’ design.
I drew it using Illustrator and a selection of source images. The two colours within the circle are Yellow and Blue, meant to subtly reflect solidarity with Ukraine, who had recently been invaded by Russia.
